There’s a reason that few people can tell you the names of romantic comedy directors. That’s because most of the time they are about as creative as a “that’s what she said” joke. One such example would be Director Andy Tennant, a man whose credits include the following abysmal rom coms: Fool’s Gold, Hitch, and Sweet Home Alabama, among others. Tennant’s forte appears to be to combine two “stars” into a romantic comedy, direct by numbers, and allow the movie to rest fully on the backs of the actors involved. At least, I hope that’s what he’s doing, because if he’s actually trying, he should just quit now. His latest formulaic effort stars Jennifer “All I Make Are Romantic Comedies” Aniston and Gerard “I’m Still Riding the Success of My Painted on Abs in 300” Butler. The film is a bland trainwreck.
The premise of The Bounty Hunter is the most creative element of the movie. A bounty hunter is sent to pick up his ex-girlfriend and bring her in for bail jumping. Unfortunately, the bounty hunter’s girlfriend is in the middle of uncovering some cop corruption, and some murderous types begin tracking her down. Meanwhile, The bounty hunter has a couple of boneheaded thugs chasing after him as well, because of his medium-range gambling debts. Together the two will fight, argue, reconcile, fight, argue, and reconcile again, as they spew forth romantic comedy detritus. It’s as generic as generic can come.
Humor-wise The Bounty Hunter has little to nothing going for it. All of the “funny” moments were seen in the trailer already… of course, they weren’t actually any funny moments in the trailer, so that gives you a little hint of what to expect in this film. The chemistry between Butler and Aniston is completely absent, and the two both come off as rather vapid unlikeable characters. There’s no intelligence in the film, and it lacks any sort of emotion that would allow you to relate to the characters, which has the added side-effect of making everything they do annoying rather than humorous.
Director Andy Tennant’s film is poorly constructed and uneven as hell. The film has no idea if it wants to be a comedy or an action flick with romantic elements. The first forty minutes of the film are purely relationship-based, and then it turns into an action movie with the occasional sappy moment or relationship argument. Tennant’s action directing is terrible, as the scenes feel contrived and unimpressive… almost as if they were thrown in there to keep the by-now-bored male viewer from yelling at his girlfriend/wife for bring him to the stupid movie in the first place. The last hour of the movie is a chore to get through and you’ll find yourself thinking about other things for most of it.
The cast of this film simply doesn’t work. Jennifer Aniston is completely forgettable in the role and Butler overplays his role to the point where his character comes off as a violent asshole, certainly not someone that a woman would want to be with. The supporting cast is non-existent. It’s a disastrous casting, and nothing ever works the way it’s supposed to.
The Bounty Hunter is a good way of showing how not to make a romantic comedy. It’s uneven, unfunny, and not even romantic. It’s movies like this that make guys dread going to chick flicks.
Final Synopsis: There’s nothing good about this film. It’s disposable, cliched, and unfunny. Skip this shit.
Points Lost: -1 for being boring, -1 for a mismatched tone throughout, -1 for dreadful action scenes, -1 for a lack of chemistry, -1 for no humor, -1 for no romance, -1 for poor direction,
Lesson Learned: Some worthless fuckers deserve each other.
Burning Question: How do we get Andy Tennant to stop directing romantic comedies? Also, if this is the script that Aniston chose, what kind of terrible shit would you find in her throwaway pile?
