In the spring of 1940, Britain was losing ground to the German army fast and at an all-time low both morally and militarily. Churchill needed a solution that would not only give him the military edge but, crucially, raise the spirits of a despondent population. Commando tells the true story of Churchill’s “band of brothers”: an unorthodox mix of misfits and buccaneers who operated outside the normal rules of warfare. Drawing on the testimony of 100 veterans and using original archive, Commando offers a rare and intimate insight into the lives and actions of the secretive group that was the forerunner of the Special Forces: the Paratroopers, the Special Air Services and the Special Boat Service.
