Four part BBC4 documentary series first broadcast in February 2007. Julia Bradbury, better known as a presenter for BBC1's Watchdog, introduces four walks selected from Alfred Wainwright's Lake District guidebooks. In each show Julia, plus film crew, follow a route described by Wainwright, encountering all the wonderful views and/or terrible weather that the Lakes offer the visitor on the way to the top. A feature of all of the shows is some stunning aerial filming giving a wonderful perspective on the size and scale of the fells.
In an accompaniment to the four individual walking shows, Julia Bradbury presents a one hour documentary about the life of Alfred Wainwright (better known as AW). It mixes the same sort of outside broadcast filming as was in the walk shows, with interviews from the friends, family and colleagues of AW. Plus drama reconstruction of AW's life and travels around the lakes, and even some archive footage of the man himself. In total it creates a detailed portrait of AW, his methods and his motivations, and it forms a great addition to the series.
