The second release on the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s own ASO Media label features a world premiere recording of the Symphony No. 1 by Christopher Theofanidis.
Commissioned by the orchestra in collaboration with the Savannah Music Festival and the Immanuel & Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival, the symphony was first heard in April 2009 in the orchestra’s Atlanta Symphony Hall home, with music director Robert Spano (who also leads the orchestra here) conducting.
The symphony is coupled with Peter Lieberson’s Neruda Songs, with mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor – the first artist to perform the work after the death of the composer’s wife, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson – joining the orchestra.
